Ushers/usherettes work in cinemas, theatres and concert halls. In cinemas they may be known as cinema attendants, customer service assistants or crew members.
Before a show they check tickets and show people to their seats. They may sell programmes, and might sell refreshments from trays or kiosks during the interval. The work involves dealing with difficult customers and late arrivals, and helping those with special needs to their seat. During the performance they deal with problems or complaints, referring customers to the manager when necessary.
Ushers/usherettes may be required to re-stock the refreshment kiosks and trays. They also collect litter and tidy up after the performance.
Some cinemas are now adopting a multiskilling approach to staffing. This may mean that an usher/usherette may also work as a cafe or bar attendant or in the box office. This position would often be advertised as front of house staff.
