Body Piercer Career Details

Body piercing involves piercing various parts of the body with a needle or stun gun and then inserting different types of jewellery and metals as a form of decoration.

The type of jewellery and metals used in body piercing will depend on which area of the body is to be pierced and the personal choice of the client. Body piercers will advise the client on what may or may not be suitable and on aftercare of the affected area.

Body piercers often combine body piercing with tattooing.

Working Environment

Body piercers usually work a five- or six-day week, which may include weekends. Hours are usually 9am to 5pm, but some studios may offer late-night openings.

Work is carried out in studios, salons or parlours, some of which may be part of a larger beauty salon.

Body Piercer Related Skills

To be a body piercer you should:

have good hand-eye co-ordination and a steady hand
have high standards of cleanliness and be constantly aware of the need for hygiene
have a knowledge of health and safety
have good interpersonal skills to talk to clients and discuss their requirements.

Body piercing has become increasingly popular over the last few years. Opportunities exist in body piercing studios, tattoo studios and beauty therapy parlours throughout the UK. Many body piercers are self- employed.
