Army Services Career Details

Service men and women in the army are commonly known as soldiers. A soldier carries out a wide range of military duties, taking part in exercises and operations, and having a skill or trade essential to the army. The army plays an important part in NATO and UN operations wherever required in the world. Many overseas operations nowadays involve peacekeeping and humanitarian roles.

The army is formed of regiments and corps, divided into:

  • Combat Arms - troops directly involved in fighting in battle. They include the cavalry, armoured corps, air corps and infantry
  • Combat Support Arms - provide artillery, field engineering, signals and intelligence support, whilst fighting in close support of the Combat Arms
  • Services - provide a range of essential support services to the other Arms, for example administration, transport and logistics, catering, technical engineering and medical care.

Working Environment

Hours vary depending on the situation. Soldiers may work daytime hours or shifts. During exercises and operations, hours may be long and irregular, and they may be separated from their family for long periods.

Soldiers are stationed in the UK and overseas and they are trained to work in a wide range of conditions and situations. The immediate work environment varies with the job and may include deskwork, outdoor work, field conditions and specialist areas such as workshops or kitchens.

  • be able to think and react quickly in rapidly changing situations
  • have good communication skills
  • be physically fit
  • be prepared to work in combat
  • be able to accept orders from others
  • have practical and technical skills appropriate to the regiment or corps you wish to join.

Army Services Career Opportunities

There is a constant need for new recruits so suitable candidates are in demand.

Promotion is from private to lance corporal, corporal, sergeant, staff sergeant or colour sergeant, warrant officer class II and warrant officer class I.

It may also be possible to work for promotion to non-commissioned officer (NCO) and from this enter officer training.
