How to become a Naturopath

naturopath careers

What does a Naturopath do?

Naturopathy is based on the idea of wholeness and natural well-being. It combines several healing methods to restore the natural energy flow of the body to its natural state of good health.

A naturopath begins a consultation by taking a detailed history from their patient. They ask them about their health problems, lifestyle and then carry out a physical examination.

Following the examination, a naturopath gives advice on diet, supplements, remedies, exercise and rest. They might also use psychological techniques, counselling and hydrotherapy.

What's the working environment like working as a Naturopath?

There are no set working hours. Naturopaths are likely to work unsocial hours, to accommodate their clients.

Naturopaths work in a consulting room, although they might treat some patients in their own homes, so a driving licence would be useful.

Their work could involve standing and bending, although most time is spent sitting down.

What does it take to become a Naturopath?

As a naturopath, you should:

  • have a genuine desire to help people
  • be able to develop an empathy with patients, understanding what they are going through
  • be good at listening so you can use the information to arrive at the best treatment
  • have the ability to motivate patients to change their lifestyle
  • be logical in working through and solving a problem, observing the situation in a detached way
  • be interested in science - human biology and chemistry are useful
  • know when to refer clients to a qualified medical doctor
